Formed in 2010, the Penn State Piano Ensemble promotes the study, awareness, and above all performance of piano ensemble music in a friendly multicultural environment. The ensemble appears regularly on and off campus in studio recital projects, faculty concerts, the Bach's Lunch concert series, and other venues. The ensemble plays a wide range of repertoire for different combinations: music for one piano (four, and six hands) as well as music for two pianos (four, and eight hands.) In addition to traditional music as well as rarely performed repertoire, one of the Penn State Piano Ensemble's goals is also that of commissioning new music. Former ensemble director: Dr. Enrico Elisi

"Bringing the Public Arena into the Private Parlor with Four-Hand Piano Music"
Enrico Elisi and Timothy Shafer, piano
Students of the Piano Area at the School of Music
Marie Sumner Lott, lecturer
In an age when Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven created provocative works on a grand scale never before heard in concert halls and opera houses, middle-class music lovers experienced those works in miniature at the parlor piano. Sisters, cousins, would-be lovers, teachers and their students gathered around the piano to play and discuss original piano duos, opera medleys, and arrangements of the most cutting-edge works of the day. This salon evening will recreate that atmosphere with live musical performances and informal discussion by faculty and students of the Penn State School of Music as well as conversation among the performers, scholars, and audience members. |
